Russia unveils model of new space station


MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's space agency on Monday unveiled a physical model of what a  new space station built in Russia would look like for the first time, suggesting that Moscow is seriously considering building a new space station. abandon the International Space Station (ISS) and go it alone. 

Russia, in what some Kremlin hardliners see as a historic break with the West as a result of sanctions imposed for what Moscow calls a "special military operation" in the Middle East. Ukraine is rushing to reduce its dependence on Western countries and move towards owning or cooperating with countries like China and Iran. 

The West, which has accused Russia of waging an unprovoked imperialist war of aggression against Ukraine, has dealt a punitive blow to the Russian economy in an attempt to deprive Moscow of technology, know-how, and money. Russia's national space agency Roscosmos on Monday displayed a model of the planned space station, dubbed "ROSS" by Russian state media at "Army-2022," a military exhibition. -Industry outside Moscow. 

Yuri Borisov, who was appointed head of Roscosmos by President Vladimir Putin last month, said Russia will leave the ISS after 2024 and is working on developing its own orbital station. 

Launched in 1998, the ISS has been continuously occupied since November 2000 in a US-Russian partnership led by Canada, Japan, and 11 European countries. 

NASA, which wants to keep the ISS operational until 2030, said it had yet to receive official confirmation of Russia's withdrawal plan and that Moscow had previously understood it would continue to participate until 2028. 

Roscosmos said knew in a statement that the new space station would launch in two phases,  giving no date. 

The first stage will see a four-module space station come into operation. This will then be followed by two other modules and a service platform, he said. This will suffice, when completed, to accommodate up to four astronauts as well as scientific equipment.
